Expressive Writing & Emotional Wellbeing:

What Research Suggests

There are experiences we speak about easily.
And then there are the ones we carry quietly.

The thoughts revisited late at night.
The emotions that remain unresolved beneath the surface.
The stories we struggle to fully explain, even to ourselves.

For many people, expressive writing becomes a way of creating space for those inner experiences to move.

Unlike structured or performance-based writing, expressive writing is not concerned with grammar, perfection, or creating something polished. It is simply the process of writing honestly and reflectively about thoughts, emotions, experiences, and internal states.

Sometimes clarity emerges through the act of writing itself.

Spiritually, reflective writing has long been connected to self-inquiry, emotional release, and personal transformation. Journaling allows thoughts that feel tangled internally to become visible externally. What once felt overwhelming or undefined can begin to take shape on the page.

For some people, this creates insight.
For others, emotional relief.
For others, a deeper understanding of themselves.

Research into expressive writing has also explored its potential psychological and emotional benefits. An online randomized controlled trial examining expressive and positive writing for participants with mood disorders found that emotional writing groups reported significantly lower stress levels compared to the control group, alongside reductions in both mental and physical symptoms over time. Researchers suggested that reflective emotional writing may offer supportive psychological benefits for some individuals. While writing is not a replacement for professional mental health support, many people continue to experience journaling and reflective writing as grounding tools for emotional processing, self-awareness, and inner reflection.

This is one of the reasons expressive writing forms part of The Rise retreat experience.

Throughout the retreat, participants are gently guided through reflective journaling exercises designed to encourage emotional awareness, personal insight, and a quieter relationship with the inner world.

There is no expectation to write perfectly.
No pressure to share.
Only an invitation to listen more honestly to yourself.

Sometimes the page becomes a mirror.
Sometimes it becomes a release.
Sometimes it becomes the beginning of understanding something differently.

A Space to Return

Many experiences within The Rise are designed to encourage reflection, emotional awareness, and a gentler reconnection with self through nature, creativity, stillness, and embodied presence.

The retreat offers a grounded and supportive environment for women seeking space to slow down, process inwardly, and rebuild from a place of greater clarity and steadiness.
